The Lumbar Gravity Line is also known as Ferguson's weight bearing line and Ferguson's gravitational line. A vertical line is drawn from the center of L3 and this line's intersection with the sacral base is assessed. The gravity line normally passes through the anterior third of the sacral base. If the lumbar gravity line passes more than 10 millimeters anterior to the sacrum, anterior stress to the lumbosacral joints occurs. On the other hand, a posterior shift of the lumbar gravity line indicates increased weight bearing forces on these same lumbosacral joints. In either case, abnormal weight bearing at this level is frequently associated with the production of low back pain and early soft tissue and osseous degenerative changes.
